Meet the Founder
Josh Bloom

Hi, I’m Josh Bloom.

Founder, Philly Service Exchange  ·  Student, The Haverford School · Philadelphia, PA

I’ve always been fascinated by one simple question:

What happens when you connect people who otherwise never would have met?

The more experiences I’ve had throughout high school, the more I’ve realized that some of life’s greatest opportunities begin with a single connection.

After spending time in Taiwan as an exchange student, I saw firsthand how bringing together people from different cultures could create friendships that changed perspectives on both sides. When I returned home, I created an English-Mandarin language exchange so students from opposite sides of the world could continue learning from one another long after the exchange had ended.

While volunteering throughout Philadelphia, I noticed another disconnect. Nonprofits needed volunteers. Students wanted meaningful service opportunities. Professionals wanted to mentor the next generation. Everyone had something valuable to offer, but those groups rarely crossed paths.

It seemed like everyone was looking for each other. No one had built the bridge.

That idea became Philly Service Exchange.

The platform connects students with nonprofit organizations where they can make a real impact in their communities. In return, those students earn opportunities to connect with professionals who generously offer mentorship, career advice, internships, job-shadowing experiences, and other opportunities that can shape their futures.

Along the way, I’ve been fortunate to serve in leadership roles through my school and community, experiences that have reinforced my belief that leadership is less about directing people and more about bringing them together around a common purpose. This summer, I was honored to be selected as one of only two students from Pennsylvania to receive a scholarship to attend the HOBY World Leadership Congress, where I’ll have the opportunity to learn alongside student leaders from 13 countries around the world. I’m excited not only for the leadership experience, but also for the chance to build connections that cross cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives.

I’ve come to believe that connection is one of the most powerful forces for change.

When students connect with nonprofits, communities become stronger. When professionals connect with students, opportunity grows. When people from different backgrounds connect, new ideas emerge. When one act of generosity inspires another, the impact reaches far beyond the individuals involved.

My hope is that Philly Service Exchange grows beyond Philadelphia into a movement that inspires students everywhere to build stronger communities by building stronger connections.

Because sometimes changing the world doesn’t begin with solving a problem. It begins by introducing the right people to one another.
